The 3rd London battalion went to Malta in September, 1914 to act as garrison troops before being sent to France in January, 1915 where they were attached to the Garhwal Brigade of the Meerut Division in the Indian Corps. The battalion went into the trenches for the first time on 21st February when they went into the line at Rue de l’Epinette where they stayed for a week during which thet sustained fourteen casualties, including Joseph Buckle who was one of three men killed on 28th February but the battalion diary provides no further information about his death. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries. |
